Destined for greatness

Looking back at the beginning (qua in retrospekt), everyone would think foolish of himself. The things one aspired to - inexperienced as one was. Not me. I always knew I was destined for greatness. They all thought of me as a cold scientist. Intelligent yes - but not an ounce of ambition. Someone to blend in in the grey army of dutiful acolytes. People were easy to play then. And they are easy to play now. People think they have me figured out, that they can read me plain as a book. Let. Them. Eat. Dust! Bear with me, as I cite a poem of my great idol - the only one whose greatness equals my own in times to come:

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: — Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert... Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:

'My Name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!'

What inexperience lacks in subtlety it makes up in determination. We weren’t a coterie but in name – yet. To travel with beasts is to travel in solitude. But they comprise excellent tools. The Infernalists were to be easy prey, their haven in Vellberg no challenge.

Curious, that those nethercreatures share our passion about the roots of our great clan. This rare jewel cast in such a desolate scene. This – forgive my directness – magic place. Ceoris – our home and origin. Genesis of all that is Tremere. The place we transformed ourselves from a mere mortal House of the Order of Hermes to the Guardians of Magic that we are today. Ceoris – our secret avocation. How often did we fantasise about sitting in these reputable halls. In the great study amidst all those invaluable tomes, looking up to those inspiring words etched in stone:

Scientia potentia est.

To open the third eye is to face madness

Was I at a crossroads? Were we to be elevated or damned? Or both? I struggled for years but finally my curiosity got the better of me.

The pyramid is strong from within. The rules are there to protect us. Infernalism is punishable by exsanguination. You know all that better than me. I turned my back to you and all I know to be true the night I opened this seemingly innocent book. And it tore me asunder. It took all my strength not to give in to desperation – in to madness. The only thing that kept me sane was the image you gave me during our fateful night. The one picture that is said to be engraved in Ceoris observatory.

The Secretkeeper

How hell-bent we were to taste this forbidden fruit. We were to cast our future together, forever one. No one was to stop us. Except ourselves. I do not regret - how could I - for am I not today the sum of my choices? But what if those choices weren't mine? Or at least not mine to make? I wanted so desperately to make you mine. Afraid to lose you – unknowing what I was to become later. It was years before I would open the book but I ask myself: Were there already signs that we missed, that I missed? Was it already apparent, that this – our – attempt of unity was a mere technicality unfitting to mend what was destined to fail. Can you blame me? I already loved you before tasting the forbidden fruit. You wanted this so much. What were we then? What are we now? Two persons made one? Or two souls chained to each other? Does this strengthen our power or is it diminishing it? I’m blabbering.

We had this discussion before. More than once. With old owl as our sole witness. We entrusted him more than one secret, that old knowing face. They said ours weren’t his only treats. Did he not witness the lightbringers creation of new unlife? What was his name?

Parting of ways

I tried to tell you. I tried to explain it to you. You wouldn’t listen. The beasts we once invited in our midst are more friend now than my brothers and sisters in the pyramid. More even than you. Every time you cast your look upon me, I felt something break inside. Your smile tore deeper wounds than any sword could muster. Where there was light for you, I could only see darkness. Where you felt cool soothing water I saw only biting flames. We became two sides of a coin. I’ll show you when and where it became most apparent. Just describe to me “our” mosaic glass window. The one which is said to have rested in the most western aisle in the great bibliotheca.

Staying afloat

We forge a chain, link by link every night. And we carry it around. And every time we struggle to stay afloat, it drags us down. When will the time come, that my strength fails me?

There once was one, who inspired me, lifted me up, was my one and only. We drifted apart. Remember, what I called her - what I called you...
